TV Glossary: A Fonzie Entrance

When Happy Days ruled the airwaves, Fonzie was THE man. Every guy wanted to be him and every girl wanted to be with him. As a result, every time he first entered the action in any episode, the live studio audience would go insane, resulting in him having to wait a beat or two until he could utter his catchphrase- "Aaaayyyyy!" which would then prompt a new cascade of cheers and applause from the audience.

This expectation eventually became a crutch for the show; pretty much anytime anyone entered a room on the show, the audience was encouraged to act like Elvis and the Beatles had simultaneously taken the stage. The writers could probably rely on five minutes getting filled with applause from the crazed audience. That's what we here at Temporary Layoffs call a "Fonzie Entrance," in honor of one of the first characters to inspire live studio audiences to act like crazed hyenas. This phenomenon was  perfectly lampooned in the Lovematic Grandpa segment of The Simpsons when Homer enters Moe's Tavern.

New Year, New Jobs: Homer Simpson, Hollywood Assistant

Homer literally fell into his dream job- as a personal assistant to Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. Eager to keep their presence in Springfield secret, they hire Homer to run errands for them. Homer is ushered into Hollywood's upper echelon, becoming friends with producer Ron Howard and rubbing elbows with the likes of Brian Grazer. Other high profile celebrities consider moving to town until Homer outs his new friends. Media descend upon the Baldwin/Basinger compound, resulting in Homer's firing.

After listening to a voice in his head whom he does not know, Homer decides to open a traveling museum featuring things he stole from the celebrities to get even with them. This eventually leads to the departure of the celebrities and Homer must return to the nuclear power plant.
